Very important. Out with the old and in with the new!

Moving is not an easy thing to do. Often you have so many things to consider and very little time to make decisions. Some of the most challenging moves are those customers downsizing from a home to a condo/apartment. You may think you have less to pack because you are moving to a smaller home.  However, the process of getting ready for the move is more complicated than a regular house to house or apartment to apartment move. Below are a few tips to help get you there.

  • Throw away all garbage and clutter in your home.
  • Get rid of electronics that no longer work or are outdated as well as tools that no longer work.
  • Donate clothing that is outdated and has not been worn in 3 years or more.
  • Long forgotten items in the garage and attic which have no meaning should all go.
  • If you have children that have moved from the family home, see if they would like any mementos that have been left behind.
  • De-clutter your car!  Check the seats and trunk and make room for those important items such as jewelry, cash, important documents, cleaning products, plants..anything that your mover cannot move for you.

Other things to remember...

  • You can start packing right away. There are many things you will not need to use right away. Pack all decorative, off season and even some pots and pans. Set a goal to pack a certain number of boxes every night, such as 5. You will be done before you know it!
  • Alert your bank, place of work, magazines, newspapers, utility companies, credit cards, insurance of your new address. A great shortcut is to forward your address with the U.S Post Office.  You can choose the date you want all mail to start forwarding. However, this is temporary so you must at some point notify all parties of your new address.
  • Be sure to open a safe deposit box for all jewelry, cash, important documents that you will transport to your new home.
  • Make arrangements to transport all live plants, chemicals, propane tanks yourself.
  • Label all moving boxes with the room each box goes to and any notes for yourself that may help you remember the contents better
  • Pack a suitcase with essential items such as medications, toiletries...etc... you do not want to be looking through boxes at the end of a long day.
